The thin leaflet appeared yellowed from age and dragon script covered the page. Over the years of servitude, Nadira gained some knowledge of this special writing, reserved for dragons.
“Oh, I wish I had paid closer attention when Lucaenad taught his right hand scribe. I’m not sure how much of this I will be able to read.” She quickly scanned the page. “It looks like a leaf from a journal!”
Nadira read out loud, “Spring – It has been a busy and most interesting season! I traveled to many destinations and discovered some crazy things in this great world of ours. I brought my scribe along to record all these fascinating adventures! I believe I have had the opportunity to observe the nine different elf species. I think I even discovered a tenth. There seems to be a race of elves hidden deep on the edge of the realm. A very wild and reclusive lot of creatures, I must say!! A very intelligent group but I am much more intrigued by their magical abilities. Quite exclusive, indeed. A match for mine but I am sure they aren’t better at it than me. Imagine that, obtaining magical abilities superior to mine! I would have to dispose of the creatures if that were the case! Ha! Ha!”
She stopped and took a deep breath. A glimpse into Lucaenad’s past, was truly a treasure to behold. She continued reading.
“Summer – I think I am in love! I met her in a most unusual way. I believe it was fate! Soon after our study of the wild elves started I experienced some fascinating but almost realistic dreams of a beautiful dragon. She stole my heart in my dreams and I never wanted to wake up. Several dreams later, I decided it was time to return home to remove these foolish fantasies from my head. When we heard the splashing of a nearby waterfall, my dutiful scribe and I stopped to refresh ourselves. And what did I see but the vision of my fantasy sparkling underneath the streams of water!! What can I say? It was love at first sight! All she had to do was bat those gorgeous eyelashes at me and I was lost. It wasn’t like we didn’t know each other. Was it? We had been frolicking in my dreams for weeks. It was like I knew her! Since then we have spent each waking hour together. I wonder what she’ll say when I ask her to come back with me?”
Lucaenad in love! Unimaginable! Astonished, Nadira sat back down. How could a beast like him ever love anyone but himself? Anxious to find out more, she resumed interpreting the dragon script.
“Winter – Fool! Fool! I have been such a fool! I should have known better. How could I forget the nasty side effects of love!”
Nadira thought, forget? It’s not possible that he could have been in love before! I’ll have to look into that later.
“I am finally healed! I fell too hard and so soon. How could I have missed the warning signs? It almost cost me my life! I should have kept a closer watch on that wild elf lord. Tricky little imp. He must’ve been observing me for quite some time! Deceived by my own kind, or so I thought! His magical ability is much more powerful than I first realized. Somehow he has developed the skill to shape shift and shape shift he did. Foul creature! Turned himself into that beautiful dragon I fell for! Such a shame a filthy animal like that could be concealed within a stunning dragon form! And more of a shame that I didn’t see through it. She…he got too close, and now I have the scar to remind me how close. Never again, will I trust an elf. I vow to destroy the elf lord and make it my mission to wipe out any of his off spring, if it’s the last thing I do!”
The last few lines were scribbled with such fierce intensity that the script was almost illegible. Dumbfounded, Nadira re-read the last few sentences of script.
“That must be the scar he continually caresses! The elf lord must’ve tried to kill him.
Rumble! Rumble! The ground began to shake underneath Nadira’s feet.
“Great! The fire dragon awakes! I need to put these back and get out of here!”
