Panther Pride!
Written by Susanna Pankiw
What a fantastic season for the Dewberry/Marwayne Panthers senior boys’ volleyball team! With dedication and perseverance they powered through practices, games and tournaments and were able to chase their dreams to the provincial playoffs.
The lifespan of this pride was an “at risk” issue at the beginning of the volleyball term. Quick thinking and cooperation between Dewberry School and Marwayne Jubilee School brought forth the birth of a new team! Reuben Baker (coach) directed the crew of ten: Devon Garnier, Lucas Dennill, Torin Johre, Kody Pushulka, Duncan Brown, Jordan Styles, Garrett Johnston, Michael Gibbs, Kobe Tannas, Brody Walterhouse. They fused their talents and forged a rock solid group. With a mighty roar and a growl they sprang into action tearing up the courts as they continued to improve. They were the hunted learning to become the hunters, on the prowl waiting to devour any team in sight!
For the first time, ever, in the history of both schools, the senior boys landed a spot at the Provincial playoffs in Edmonton, November 28-30th. Getting there was no easy feat! This 1A school proudly won the right to represent their district in a 2A provincial tournament. They were able to experience the commitment it takes to compete at the provincial level against schools that are much bigger than theirs. Although they did not win a medal, they scratched up the B.T.P.S. trail and created a path for the next year’s team! Way to go Panthers!! Job well done!
