Celebrating Successes at Dewberry School

“Don’t wait for something big to occur. Start where you are, with what you have, and that will always lead you into something greater.” - Mary Manin Morrissey
The students and staff at Dewberry School definitely don’t have to wait for something big to occur; they are living examples of the greatness that surrounds this community. Even though the magic of Christmas left the building, the after effects, like pebbles in a pond, continued to radiate. Their local food drive, along with assistance from the Dewberry Mustangs and the Agriculture Society produced 238 lbs of food that was dropped off at the Lloydminster Interval Home and $55 donated to the Men’s Shelter.
The dawning of the new year rang in New Year’s resolutions and wishes for many good times to come. Claps and cheers could be heard in the gym as a colorful display of citizenship qualities set off fireworks of pride. Students were recognized for outstanding attributes of leadership, organization and perfect attendance.
Even though the feasting was over, the staff and sometimes fellow students of the Breakfast Club continued to provide a warm, yet nutritional daily welcome. The smell of toast and fresh fruit welcomed the students and they enjoyed some friendly interaction with the staff. These morning routines are like mini celebrations of the special bonding that has created an impressive ambiance to the Dewberry School environment.
Decorations have been taken down but are not gone; instead they serve an instructional purpose now. The students will become artists and their canvas will be a blank piece of paper where they will paint pictures with words. Some of our budding artists have been the Grade 1/2 class that have been very busy becoming authors! There has been a large focus on learning their Smartie Sight Words and using them in their Creative Writing. Students were given the opportunity to become authors, and create an alternate ending to the story ‘The Very Cranky Bear’ by Nick Bland. The outcome was fabulous and they were very proud of their work! They will eventually move towards a drama portion and be able to re-enact their new story creations!
Another group of blossoming authors is the Grade 3/4 class! They have been focusing on generating fabulous word choices for “overused” words. With a little help from “Fancy Nancy” and her interesting substitutions for boring words they are learning how to use the wonderful invention of the thesaurus! Eventually, they will swap the forbidden words in their creative story writing to more sensational, vivid and “showing” expressions.
Don’t you think staying in your jammies helps keep you inspired? P.J. Day at Dewberry School brought out greatness in so many ways. From fantastic smiles to inventive story creations, the comfort provided an overall positive atmosphere that the staff and students exuded that day (and every day).
With the new year off to such a magnificent start, we can’t wait to see what the rest of the school year has in store! We don’t intend to wait around for greatness but rather we will continue to lead the way with remarkable accomplishments!
