I managed my first half marathon this year on Sunday, July 21, 2013! It wasn't what I anticipated! The route itself was great and the people, including the runners were very friendly and encouraging! The day was beautiful, even after the horrible storm the evening before! But, the fallen tree limbs and debrie paled in comparison to my painful last 4 miles!! I felt great and could've run all day until mile 8! That's when the pain set in and it only got worse! By my 11.5 mile mark the pain was excruiating and went right up into my hip! Also partway through the run my stomach began to work against me. Little did I know that I was in the beginning stages of food poisoning!!! Needless to say my stubborness and determination got me to the finish line! So much for beating my personal best, I hobbled in at 2:13:48! Ugh!!! My only question now is, dare I attempt the Edmonton Half Marathon on August 25?
Well, my 2nd half marathon was put on hold :( I developed a knee injury & had to withdrawl from the race! Running injury? I thought this would never happen to me! Boy was I wrong!! Fortunately it wasn't something I did wrong but it was definitely something I had been born with. I apparently have high arches & this has contributed to my knee injury. After a month of physio & being fitted for orthotics I am finally gaining my distance back. I am up to 4 miles of running. A drastic difference & disappointment from the 12 miles I was at a month ago. I am hoping that I will mend soon & can increase my distance to be able to enter a different half marathon by July or August!! I have been slowly increasing my mileage after my much unexpected knee injury. It keeps rearing its ugly head just when I think I am out of the woods. On June 30, I managed 8 miles but my knee started to give me grief at 6! I noticed if I relaxed my leg muscles and slowed down I could actually continue to run without feeling too much pain! After a week of running in the mountains I managed 10 miles!!! I wasn't sure I would make it, not because of my knee but rather the dreadful uphill portions of the run. I did it, though and also used more of my sore muscles going up the walkways to the Atlantis Waterslides! Today I am observing a much needed rest day! Maybe I might be able to do the half marathon in Lacombe, on Sunday, July 21st! |
